Collegians ‘surrender’ at Surge retreat

By Marc Hill, NAU Christian Challenge Campus Missionary –

Christian Challenge, Arizona Southern Baptists’ collegiate ministry, met for our annual discipleship retreat, Surge, Feb. 8-10, at Emmanuel Pines Camp in Prescott. A total of 175 students and missionaries from 12 chapters attended. The occasion of so many college students gathering together created a dynamic, vibrant atmosphere of worship and community.

Dewayne Hawkins, pastor of Life Givers Church, Goodyear, was the weekend’s speaker. Through four powerful messages, he unpacked the weekend’s theme: Surrender. Students en masse responded to the call to surrender all to the Master, and the weekend culminated with a specific call to surrender to the “cause” of the Master with a commitment to be active in sharing the gospel.

Each message was followed by a Campus Time, where individual chapters had the opportunity to share, debrief and pray. Musical worship was led by a Challenge missionary band assembled by Christian Challenge Regional Catalyst Trevor Bush. There was also time for fun and relaxation through an all-camp game of Ultimate Capture the Flag Saturday afternoon and a rousing Lip-Sync Battle on Saturday night.

Arizona Southern Baptist churches’ generous giving through the Cooperative Program helped make this event possible.

Pray for Christian Challenge as we seek to engage college students with the gospel, develop disciples of Jesus Christ and mobilize servant-leaders for the church through partnering with local churches to establish ministry on every college campus in Arizona.

Pray for the students who attended Surge to follow through and live surrendered lives active in sharing the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
