Disaster relief training scheduled for March 9-10

By Kay Harms
Arizona Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, under the new direction of layperson Lary Hyde, will host its annual spring training event the weekend of March 9-10, at First Southern Baptist Church, Scottsdale.
Newcomers to the ministry are invited to sign up for the course "Involving Southern Baptists in Disaster Relief," where they can learn the basics of assisting in times of disaster. This preliminary course will be offered, along with others, on Saturday.
Training will also be provided in various units of Disaster Relief, such as feeding unit, shower unit, first aid, mudout, water purification, childcare, driver training and CPR. A two-day training unit will be offered to chaplains from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
Hyde encouraged people who are looking for a one-on-one ministry opportunity to register for the training.
"Disaster Relief is a great way to reach out to lost people," Hyde said. "We'll put people to work in a ministry where they're really impacting people one-on-one and have the opportunity to share the gospel."
Hyde stressed that Disaster Relief also ministers in other ways besides answering disaster calls. For instance, DR teams cooked and served the meals at the November annual meeting of the Arizona Soutehrn Baptist Convention and the ACE Conference.
"We're just trying to get more people engaged in ministry throughout the Arizona Southern Baptist Convention," said Hyde.
